Hello! It completely blows my mind how time has quickly passed me by. Projects are still underway and photo sessions have been taking place. I've held them back from view for the time being as I'm hoping to launch the new Reverie Tree website in May. So until then, I hope you will enjoy the above video as much as I did. Where's my Kleenex?

For quite some time now, I've been struggling with which direction to go with my photography. Many would suggest that I go with "where the money is" as that would be the only logical thing one would do when pursuing any career. But most of us know that it's far easier said than done, especially now with the industry being heavily saturated with other photographers seeking to do the same. A couple of years ago, I read a brief profile about a young British photographer, now living here in the States, by the name of Nick Hall. He was chosen as one of PDN's 30 New and Emerging Photographers to watch. When asked what he considered to be his greatest challenge as a photographer, I was grateful for his answer. He wrote: Doubt, and wondering whether you have what it takes to succeed. You probably don't get over it, you just learn to manage it. The way I do it is to be really committed to my personal work - to just produce work all the time, do the work you enjoy doing, and hone the style.

This month, I've officially started my new personal project, which will focus on editorial portraiture of men and a certain fashion trend that's been taking the country by storm. 100% of the project will be shot using various types of film. I was grateful to my friend, local videographer Ben Woods, for being willing to be my first participant. I'll share more information about this photo essay as it develops. Until next time folks!
I know. I realize I'm just a little obsessed with Kinfolk. But seriously, can you blame me? This publication is like my portal into a world where things are in order, clean, a little quieter, a little simpler, always with good food and with good friends who really have great fashion sense. So when Kinfolk announced the release of their new cookbook, I knew I had to have a copy.

My first attempt in making the Almond-Jam Tart went extremely well, that is until I pulled it out of the oven. For anyone who has NEVER baked a tart before, ALWAYS remember that the tart pan comes in two sections and that when pulling it out of the oven it is best that you hold it with two hands. I did this up until I wanted to free my right hand to close the oven door at which point my brain completely forgot to remind me that that was going to be a bad idea. Let's just say that the outer ring ended up as a 350˚ bracelet around my wrist for a hot second and my tart ended up splattered all over the kitchen floor. Tip: A friend told me that when using a tart pan, it helps to place it on top of a baking sheet. This helps to keep fluids from dripping into the oven as well as to make removal a lot less cumbersome.

So these photos are of my second attempt at making this tart. It truly is as delicious as it looks!

The recipe for this tart was submitted by Lillie Auld of Butter Me Up Brooklyn, and is featured in the latest issue of Kinfolk (Issue 9 - pg. 96) and in the cookbook (pg. 53). Enjoy!

Hello friend. I've been trying hard to put together a post worth sharing. Honestly, it's been pretty difficult to do, as you can tell by the long stretches of time between each entry. It's not that I haven't had anything to bring to you. It's just that once I sat here attempting to put it together so that it made sense, I simply couldn't do it. So I'll go ahead and apologize now if this entry seems a little disjointed. There has been a lot of soul searching going on within myself. I've been keeping my distance only to allow myself the room I need to be able to breathe . . . deeply.

A few weeks ago, I took my family to Ev-Henwood, a wooded area tucked away about 20 minutes outside of Wilmington. It was just the kind of wilderness I've been needing. My daughter, before being mauled by mosquitoes, exclaimed joyfully that it was like being in a magical forest you read about in a storybook. It was important for me to hear that. As a parent, especially in the day and age we live in, I worry sometimes that my child doesn't have enough exposure to the natural world. As I watch her soak in the smells, texture, and sounds of the woods, I'm reminded of how quickly she has grown and of how much I have yet to show her. I, myself, have felt so far removed from nature that I can feel this thick layer of impenetrable skin slowly forming over my heart like a wall. Just when I think I'm a lost cause, my daughter gleefully shows me a multi-colored spotted leaf she picked up off the forest floor. It's so pretty Mama. I look closely at this leaf, one that looks just like many of the others scattered about in front of me, when I realize that in my hand I hold a letter from God written with veins upon a multi-colored spotted page, delivered to me by a six year old courier. Nature is another way the Creator speaks with us. I have truly missed these conversations.

Hello friends. I wanted to stop in and let you know that I have not fallen off the face of the earth like I wish I could sometimes. Ha! Things had been a little stormy here on my end, but I'm ok. A lot on my mind.

As Tropical Storm Andrea continues to hang out here on the East Coast, I wish for all my friends that reside along the Atlantic safety and peace in the midst of this storm.

Until next time.

Hey friends! I hope everyone is doing well! The sun is shining and it is just glorious outside right now! I wanted to stop in to share with you some photos I took of my 'mini-me' and the awesome belts and buckle that were custom made for her by my wonderful, and insanely talented friend Brandy Kayzakian-Rowe of Mesa Dreams Leatherworks. Some of you might recall an interview I did with Brandy, focusing primarily on her photography and artwork, awhile back. Seriously, she is a powerhouse in and of herself! Brandy, her husband Djerek - who is also her partner in this new artistic venture, and their pups, made the move to Colorado from New Hampshire little over a year ago. You can see how Colorado's rugged yet beautiful landscape and Southwestern culture has helped inspire her to work with a different medium: leather.

Brandy is always coming up with new ideas and products. One of her newer creations, which has been getting a lot of attention lately, is the Leather Clutch Wallet. It is GORGEOUS! I want one!! This gem's beauty is all in the amazing detail work. Just looking at it makes you want to travel all over the globe JUST so you can add more stars to your wallet!

I cannot thank Brandy enough for sharing her brilliant talents with my family, and for making my kid (and her Mama) super happy!

For more information, and to also stay up-to-date with new products, check out Brandy's Facebook page, as well as her Etsy shop.
The rain was pretty intense the last couple days. The sun did finally break through the pretty bleak weather later on in the day. Meanwhile, I was able to appreciate some color and a few remaining raindrops left on some of the plants and flowers we have around. So grateful Mother Nature has a way of perking us up with her beauty.

Yesterday, my grandfather would have celebrated his 82nd birthday. He absolutely loved the sea. This morning, I came across this video, part of the Smith Journal series by Australian filmmakers, Commoner Films. From the moment I hit the play button, I immediately thought of Grandpa. I think he would've enjoyed this story, and I think you will too. Also, April is National Poetry Month. I thought maybe you'd enjoy a little bit of Whitman today as well.

Below, a myriad myriad waves hasting, lifting up their necks,

Tending in ceaseless flow toward the track of the ship,

Waves of the ocean bubbling and gurgling, blithely prying,

There's a new Apple app that I am pretty stoked about! Found via Victoria Smith's blog, sfgirlbybay, Printic is an app that turns your iPhone photos into prints and, AND!!! mails them for you for FREE! The cost of each pic is 99¢, with a minimum of 3 photos per purchase, but as I said, shipping is free. I had to order some myself just to see, and I can tell you, in just a few days time (like 3), I got my little photos and I am thrilled! Thrilled I tell you!! So for those of us who love the convenience of shooting with our iPhones (this app is not yet available for Android. Sorry!), who also love seeing our postal workers deliver more than just bills to our mailboxes, this app is for you.

If you are ever in downtown Wilmington, one of the places you'd visit would be the Cotton Exchange, a historic site made up of several buildings that at one time had been one of the largest exporters of cotton here on the east coast. Now, its buildings house several different businesses ranging anywhere from gift shops, art galleries, restaurants, and more. One of these businesses happens to be Pure Life, a health food store and juice bar owned and operated by Victoria Chavez. I met Victoria nearly three years ago, when our family first moved the Cape Fear area. At the time, her shop was a bit smaller, and located in another building. Today, her storefront sits right on North Front Street, gaining a lot of traffic from passerbys, as well as, college students anxious to drink down one of her popular bubble teas. Unlike many of the other health food stores in town, Victoria offers more than just herbal teas, vitamins, gluten-free and organic items, she also has her own line of health and beauty products. Everything from shampoos, soaps, ointments, and even a line of baby products she named after her little girl, Emilia. I wanted to learn more about Victoria and her business, and I was so pleased that this amazing and inspiring woman agreed to sit down and share her story with me.

Originally from Bronx, New York, Victoria got her start in the health food business at the age of sixteen, working for a local health food store in West New York, New Jersey. Before this time, she already had quite a good grasp of herbology, owing a lot of what she knows about it from her maternal grandmother, a woman of Taíno Indian decent from Puerto Rico. Victoria recalls the memory of how she landed her job at the health food store. She was in the process of graduating two years early from high school with honors, working part-time for a local hospital in their youth clinic, all during an extremely difficult time in her life. "I really needed a job so that I could find my own place. Every day, I would pass by this health food store. They had a HELP WANTED sign in their window so every day I would go in and ask 'Are you guys hiring?' And every time the answer was 'No.' So one day, I went in and asked again and when the lady told me 'no', I said 'So if you're not hiring, why do you have a HELP WANTED sign in your window?!" Her persistence paid off. The woman took her upstairs to speak with the store owner. The owner, Richard, underestimating her capabilities due to her young age, had made Victoria an offer. She would have two weeks to learn about every single vitamin they carried: their properties, scientific names, and health benefits. If she passed the test, she would be hired on. Seeing the unfairness of the near impossible task, the owner's mother secretly assisted Victoria by giving her tips on how to remember all the information she needed to know about each vitamin. Needless to say, when the two weeks were up, Victoria passed his test with flying colors. She was hired. And for nearly 3 years, she would work there, learning as much as she could about running a business, from bookkeeping, product knowledge and customer service. She happily and gratefully recalls everyone who took their time to teach her the skills she needed to be successful. "Nelly, the woman I kept pestering about the job, was such a huge blessing to me. She taught me how to balance things like checkbooks, and how to save money. And, Richard! He has been one of the biggest blessings in my life. I owe a lot to him."

After turning nineteen, Victoria moved on to work as an accountant for companies up and down the east coast. "I made a lot money doing it, but I hated it. I hated my job." In 2000, she moved to North Carolina. Here, she had worked several different types of jobs ranging from accounting and even to social work, trying to find a career that best suited her. A few years later, in 2007, between her savings and an inheritance, she managed to gain quite a bit of capital to start her own business. "I had this money and I thought, 'What am I going to do with it?' I was thinking about opening a coffee shop, a clothing store, but I didn't like any of those options. Then I started thinking about what makes me really and entirely happy. And that's how Pure Life came along. I remembered that the happiest years of my life were when I was working in the health food store. I enjoy being with people and helping people, and seeing their faces light up when I do."

Since its humble beginnings six years ago, Pure Life continues to grow. With the addition of a juice bar, Victoria has been able to provide even more to her customers by offering healthy drinks made with organic fruits and vegetables. Within the next few years, Victoria plans to further her already extensive knowledge of homeopathic remedies by attending a school for natural medicine. In the meantime, she happily continues to assist her clientele by providing natural, holistic alternatives for any ailment or need. One of her most popular items happens to be the Miracle Skin Relief ointment. Based on one of her grandmother's original recipes, this handmade ointment, made up of several different oils and herbs, has been used to relieve many skin irritations such as rash, burns, as well as, psoriasis and eczema. It can also be used as a moisturizer, and with frequent use, has also helped minimize scarring from burns to acne. Personally, I can tell you that this product works AND it smells wonderful!

When asked what advice she had for individuals who desire to make healthier changes to their diet, but feel that it is too costly, she answers, "Start slow. If you feel that it's too expensive to buy organic, it's true, it's expensive, just stop buying junk food. You save money that way. Replace the junk food with something healthier, like more fruits and vegetables." Victoria also encourages people to consider growing produce in their own yards, or in a community garden. However, if gardening is something that you're not quite ready to pursue, try making a point to start purchasing foods locally grown from a farmer's market. She also suggests that folks should spend their funds buying more food to make at home versus the cost of eating out. "This way, instead of eating for just one meal, you would have several days worth." It all makes complete sense. "People need to realize that eating healthier is possible, you just have to think differently about how you spend your money."

The difference people will feel when walking into her store versus some of the larger health food markets is that she takes the time to get to know her clients. "When our customers come in to our store, especially the ones that do come in frequently, we know about their dog, about their kids, we know their medical history, we know about what supplements they're taking, and what they're not taking. We pretty much know what's going on in their lives because we work with them one-on-one. We build relationships. We don't see them as just a customer, we see them as family. We make each visit about you, and not about how much you're spending. Whether you're spending a dollar or three hundred dollars, you'll be treated the same way because you're my customer. You become a part of Pure Life."

Victoria is a smart, beautiful, and vibrant young lady, shaped greatly by her life experiences. She has managed to find a way to balance the task of running a small, yet growing business, as well as raising a beautiful baby girl. Her energy, enthusiasm, and determination has brought her the happiness she enjoys today. She gives thanks for who she is, and where she has come in life to her faith in God, and to her wonderful family, specifically to her husband who always encouraged her creativity and the pursuit of her dreams; and also to her grandmother who has been her greatest inspiration and spiritual leader. Full of the kind of wisdom that one would expect from someone much older than herself, I can truly say that Victoria is a modern day Medicine Woman, and I am truly grateful and honored to have spent this time getting to know her.

Happy Spring everyone!! The sun is out in full force here in Wilmington, North Carolina, but the temperatures outside are still CHILL-eee! Today, we are looking at a sunny 50˚. And now that the weather talk is out of the way, I hope this finds all of you well and excited about the change of season. I know I am!

Well, so far, March has been proving to be a pretty busy month for me. Last week, my wonderful cousin Chelsea flew in from Phoenix, Arizona. A grad school student, this trip to the Atlantic on her spring break was a much needed reprieve for her, and I enjoyed every minute of her stay. The days were filled with a ton of laughter (you'll see one of the reasons why here in a minute) and a lot of good, really good conversation. I also shot some photos for a local lighting business, met with a couple of people about upcoming photo shoots, AND I finally joined my local YMCA. Yay! Starting to see some exciting things sprouting up around here.

This month, I've also picked up my Character Project, an on going series focusing on interesting and inspiring folks who are willing to share their stories. In the next couple of days, I'll share with you an interview I did with Victoria Chavez, the founder and owner of Pure Life Organics. But until that post, I leave you with a few images from my "A Day Out with Iris" series. (Iris being my younger sister who couldn't be here when our cousin was in town. We didn't want her to feel left out. Needless to say, she's the one with her head on a stick!) Cheers!
You know, I love a good story, and if you can't already tell, I'm a sucker for visual storytelling. Vimeo is my favorite channel. With digital cameras also playing the role of the video recorder, it's no wonder that many photographers are also stepping over, and quite brilliantly may I add, into the realm of videography. Ryan Marshall of Pacing the Panic Room is one such photographer. And let me just say, he's a darn good storyteller, but as you'll see in this video, he is also one heck of a poet!

Color! Oh how I miss you so! In truth, I actually love the bleakness of Winter, but after so long, the eyes and brain begin to crave the stimulation that only the colors of the rainbow can bring. I guess one of the beauties about winter months is that they make us appreciate the glory of warmer temperatures and the vibrancy of nature in bloom.

So, with camera in tow (the new to me Pentax K1000) I headed over to the Wilmington Arboretum to see if perhaps Spring decided to send any messages about her impending arrival. There were a few. Many of the camellias were already in full bloom, however, perhaps as a way to remind us that this is still her time, it looked as if Winter's frosty fingers could not help but to pinch their soft petals 'til they wilted just a little. She still technically has 3 weeks to hang around you know.

The rain has been falling all day. Through the dark morning hours and into this bleak afternoon, there are no signs that it will cease. And that's okay. This morning, it seemed almost impossible to get up and be motivated to do much of anything. I scanned through films on Netflix hoping that something would rouse my mind from its slumber, but nothing. Then I opened up the kitchen window, allowing some cool air to flow in, and that's when it hit me: the gleeful sounds of birds singing in the distance, perhaps a tune of how much we all anticipate the arrival of Spring; the pattering of raindrops as they descend from the roof and into a small stream that now flows over the gravel in my driveway; then the hurried wind as it rushes through the pane and into this room as if to say, "Yes! I too am here!"

Nature has a way of grounding me like nothing else. The sacred connection between man and nature cannot be replaced or replicated by anything else. It is pure in every sense of the word.

And so, today, I will continue to write, read, and enjoy a nice warm cup of coffee. Enjoy your day friends, whether it be rain or shine.

Several years ago, during one of the many day trips Alex and I would embark on, we drove into a small town called Fayetteville, in Lincoln County, Tennessee. Fayetteville is about an hour south of Nashville, and just north of Huntsville, Alabama. Back then, folks walking around with cameras strapped around their necks was not something you saw everyday in Fayetteville's town square. So, it should have been no surprise when a few of the locals, who took note of our picture taking, came out to see what we were about. First, it was the hairdresser from Dawn's who shouted out to us from across the street, "What ya'll doin'?" between drags on her cigarette. We met and talked with Shirley, sharing with her the project we had in mind of driving around Tennessee, capturing the little nuances that made the smaller, and some more obscure, towns so interesting. At some point in our conversation, an apparent client of Shirley's came out to see whether or not she had had any intentions of coming back to the task of getting her hair done. "I'm on a smoke break," was the answer she gave, followed by a sly grin and a wink. It was fun watching the two of them out there in front of the salon, their camaraderie apparent in the way they joked with each other, that I had to ask if they would allow me to take their photo. "Aww, well, I don't know," they said. "Oh please c'mon, this is hilarious!" Shirley says, "Okay, well hang on a second," and she rushes back into the salon only to return with a cordless phone and a bottle of hair product. She shoves the bottle into her client's hand, only for her to reply, "And what am I supposed to do with this?" The above photo was the result of their playful exchange.

Later on, we were pulled into a little antique shop just a few doors down. The owner was anxious to share some local history and gave a few suggestions as to other places to visit. It was such a pleasure to be able to converse with complete strangers who were all so willing to welcome us to their town. There were other places we visited. Some of them much less jovial, like the time we strolled into Petersburg on our way back to Nashville from Fayetteville. The sign you saw upon entering the city limits was shot so many times with bullets that it resembled a green cheese grater. The "square" was nothing more than a few buildings standing on four different sides, most of them empty. One of the buildings that was occupied belonged to a retired couple from Michigan who shared their story of how they came to Petersburg and the struggles they faced being the "Damn Yankees" in this tiny southern town. It's amazing the people you meet and the stories you'll hear.

These conversations are what I truly love about photography. It really became all about the people I met, and not so much about the landscape. My camera became a key that helped unlock doors, allowing me that chance to connect with others. And I truly miss that. We never did get to fully invest time into our Tennessee project like we had hoped as a job promotion prompted me to make a move to Kentucky. However, the desire to venture into new places, and to meet new faces still remains. This gypsy is getting restless again.

Music, for me, is the key that unlocks the door to my subconscious. There is nothing more influential to my mood, my creativity, my sanity than music. Here lately, I've been extremely drawn to the beautiful arrangements composed by a group based out of Austin, Texas : Balmorhea. I first learned about them after watching this Kinfolk video and immediately fell in love. What I enjoy most about their music is the texture of their sound. Multi layers of classical instruments such as the cello and violin, interwoven with that of the electric bass and guitar, create such a masterpiece that shows the quality and brilliance of its creators. So for those of you who join me now, to add a little more mood to the ambience, simply listen below.

It is already half way through January. Can you believe it?! And only now have I been able to truly sit down and share with you my word for 2013: c e l e b r a t e.

Last year was a difficult one. I know there are many of you out there who would agree with me. But I won't go into those times right now. Instead, despite all the hardship, frustrations, disappointments, loneliness, and grief of 2012, I choose now to celebrate the fact I survived. I look around and see times are changing and rapidly. This year I want to celebrate friendship, family, and the beauty that this life, this world, has to offer if only I would slow down enough to see it, and embrace it. I'm putting on my rose-tinted glasses and welcoming the sunshine!

And how about you? What is YOUR word for 2013?
