If I had to choose only one thing to photograph, I would choose to photograph the human face. There is just something so intriguing, captivating about it. From the eyes, the expression, the age. Without even having to say a single word, our face speaks volumes. Stare at a person long enough, you notice things. Perhaps that's why many of us tend to become self-conscious when stared at too long. It's as if our deepest thoughts are being displayed on our face like a movie projected on a wall. Some of my all time favorite photos taken by other photographers were of people, their faces telling us the story of their lives. I think of the infamous photo taken by Steve McCurry of the young Afghan girl. Her strength beamed through those piercing, vibrant green eyes that captivated the entire world.

The idea of working on a portrait project has been bouncing around in my head since I first learned of the USA Channel's Character Project. Lack of time, and honestly, the lack of confidence has kept me from starting. The latter being the biggest culprit for the hesitation. Yet, the more I take notice of time and how quickly it has flown by me this year (it's like November right? NOVEMBER!) I realize how important doing this project is, for me. It's not a matter of gathering images for a portfolio. It goes much deeper than that.

With a few shoots scheduled within the next couple of weeks, I hope to have some characters here to share with you.

  1. I love the character project and have longed to do portraits like this. But I'm too shy to just walk up to relative strangers. I need to get over that.

  2. I cannot do portraits to save my life.

Great diversity with these three shots. Well done.
